Life is about creating opportunities for memories

Holly Wreath CW

So it’s Christmas eve! I awoke this morning to sunshine through my window, the first time in a while. That automatically put me in a good mood. It’s been a really difficult year both personally & professionally for many, probably most of us, but the sunshine through the window on Christmas eve morning made me feel grateful (gratitude is such a grounding emotion). So I’m sat here drinking yogi tea like a hipster and I felt inspired to share the above quote with you.

“Life is about creating memories”, as the saying goes. However I think there’s more to it than that. You’ll see as you get to know me that I like to adapt well known adages and sayings to be a tad more specific and applicable to my experience of life (a favourite being “what will be, will be (*…provided you put the effort in)” - more on that one later!)

Life is about more than just ‘creating memories’. It’s about creating the opportunities for those memories. What do I mean by that? Well, for example (in normal, not covid times), if you get the opportunity to get hold of some last minute concert tickets for that same evening, despite having to rearrange all your plans, you might make the effort to go. I say ‘might’ as ultimately the choice is yours. Sure, it’s an effort to rearrange everything, and potentially let some people down, but you might just find it’s more than worth it.

Most times I get connected with what will turn out to be ‘favourite people’ or when I look back at my favourite memories, they have always come from a weird diversion I took off the beaten track. These are often referred to as ‘synchronicities’ - being where you’re meant to be at a given time for special things to happen.

This applies both in your personal life and your professional life. That Christmas party or meeting you might blow off as you don’t know anyone going might just introduce you to a future ‘favourite person’, ‘favourite night/experience’, or someone who will introduce you to one. But in order to realise this you first need to actually go, and then you need the most fabulous of tools, hindsight, to verify this theory. Or you could just not go and never know. That’s the beauty of life - the choice is yours. You won’t take all the opportunities - sometimes you won’t even notice them - but when you do, rarely will you look back and regret it, in my opinion.

So create opportunities, and thus create memories. With opportunities come people, places, sights, sounds, smells, colours, new ventures, new faces, old faces….memories. The opportunity is the effort on your part. The memory is the result of that action.

I won’t ramble on, but I just wanted to share this. Approach every opportunity to create memories with an open mind, a pinch of gratitude and side dollop of effort and just watch the current from the river we call life nudge you to where you are meant to be.
